HoFP Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Theodor Seuss Geisel
From Feb. 11 through Mar. 5, 2005, the House of Frames and Paintings (HoFP) Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present, The Art of Dr. Seuss A Retrospective and National Exhibition. Celebrating the 100th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss), this exhibit will chronicle his life and career with a focus on the common artistic links throughout his nearly 70 years of creativity.
The exhibition begins with his early drawings in Life magazine, includes his editorial, advertising, military, and book illustrations, and finally, his secret art collection. Works in the exhibition were curated by William W. Dreyer, and selected from significant public and private collections, including the University of California San Diego archives, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, and the Dr. Seuss Estate, and feature rare and never-before-seen art from the 1920's to 1990's.
Theodor Seuss Geisel (American, 1904-1991), a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little known editorial cartoonist in the 1920's. His intriguing perspective and fresh concepts ignited his career, and his work evolved quickly to deft illustrations, modeled sculpture and sophisticated oil paintings of elaborate imagination.
Dr. Seuss is currently best known as one of the most beloved and best selling children's authors of all time, having written and illustrated classics such as Green Eggs and Ham and How The Grinch Stole Christmas! Geisel was also a political cartoonist for PM magazine during World War II, as well as a contributing illustrator for Vanity Fair and Life. He had a long, successful advertising career, he was an Academy Award winner for his wartime documentaries, as well as his animated short film, Gerald McBoing Boing and today his paintings hang in fine art galleries.
His unique artistic vision emerged as the golden thread which linked every facet of his varied career, and his artwork became the platform from which he delivered 44 children's books, over 400 World War II political cartoons, hundreds of advertisements, and countless editorials filled with wonderfully inventive animals, characters and clever humor. Geisel single-handedly forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the Surrealist Movement of the early 20th Century and the inspired nonsense of a child's classroom doodles.
Along with his position as curator and director for the Art of Dr. Seuss - A Retrospective and National Touring Exhibition, William Dreyer is recognized as a leading authority on the art of Dr. Seuss with research focused on prominent public and private collections including The Dr. Seuss Estate, the Dr. Seuss archives at University of California, San Diego, and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential library.
As a 15 year art world veteran, Dreyer spent the last four years researching the life and art of Theodor Seuss Geisel as a prelude to this exhibition. "After seeing an amazing selection of rare and significant works from major Dr. Seuss collections, it was time to share these humorous, historic and quite unrestrained images with the American public."
Dreyer continues to play a key part in the Fine Art publishing world by advancing standards in the print market and is currently an acting member of the Art Publishers Association on the Steering Committee and Standards Committee.
HoFP Gallery features original paintings, sculpture and limited edition fine art prints in styles ranging from contemporary to traditional masterworks. The gallery represents acclaimed American and international artists.
