February Issue 2005
Spencer Art Galleries in Charleston, SC, Feature Works by Julie Townsley and Jim Nicholson
Interesting,
provocative, creative, visually exciting - just a few words being
used to describe the exhibition being presented by the Spencer
Art Galleries in Charleston, SC, in February. A special exhibit
of Julie Townsley's recent works entitled, Broads on Broad,
will be held at the Spencer Art Gallery I, 55 Broad Street, from
Feb. 18 through Apr. 20, 2005, and Wild Things Considered,
featuring recent works by Jim Nicholson will be held at the Spencer
Art Gallery II, 57 Broad Street, from Feb. 18 through Mar. 18,
2005.
Julie Townsley presents Broads on Broad, creating a world
of her own with her soft sculptures, evoking images of people
or things you might have met or seen in your dreams. Her work
is fresh, interesting, beautiful and never disappointing!
Townsley creates her sculpture with hand-sewn muslin or canvas. Each piece is stuffed to create three-dimensional effects, hand-sewn onto an armature and then painted.
"The way I use the canvas incorporates any and all painting techniques from Impressionism, Baroque, Abstract, Pop, and beyond," says Townsley, adding. "I am taking traditional sewing methods to a higher ground in art, extending the methods beyond what the modern masters achieved. It is not my intention to be shocking or entertaining. I just want to create great art that will touch people's lives and hearts in a good way."
Wild Things
Considered
reflects the nature of Jim Nicholson, an outdoorsman and a master
at painting birds, deer, lions, tigers and bears (Oh My!). His
capture of ducks, birds dogs, geese, etc. reflect the way most
people think of wildlife in the Lowcountry. Nicholson's paintings
carry that spark of realism, time, and place that so many artists
somehow fail to capture when painting wildlife. His paintings
convey that definite "wish I had been there, seen that"
to any avid hunter or wildlife enthusiast.
