Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC, Features Works by Suzanne Zoole
The Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC, is presenting an exhibition of works by Suzanne Zoole, sponsored by Tryon Painters and Sculptors. The exhibit will be on view from Feb. 6, through Mar. 1, 2005.
Zoole received her BA in German from Agnes Scott College and subsequently was granted a Fulbright Scholarship for the study of linguistics at the University of Gottingen, Germany. During that year she traveled to Turkey and Greece where she investigated museums and sites of the ancient world. It was during this time that Post-impressionism, particularly works of Van Gogh developed into her primary artistic interest. Upon returning home she earned a Master's degree in German from the University of Colorado and went on to teach German language and literature.
Zoole's second vocational path was that of a marriage and family therapist. She completed a Master's degree in Psychology at the University of North Texas and practiced that career for 25 years in Spartanburg, SC. It was during this period that the works of Matisse became a central interest, as manifested by attending exhibits and collecting posters of those exhibits. It was during the end of this period that she began her pursuit of painting seriously.
Zoole states that, "painting has been an avocation since childhood and at present has developed into the third serious vocational endeavor of her life." In recent years she has attended the Springmaid Beach watercolor workshops annually and has received instruction on a regular basis from Carrie Brown. While continuing to paint in water media, her primary emphasis has shifted from watercolors to acrylics.
"Sense of place and love of place characterize my interiors," says Zoole. "Although a variety of subject matter finds its way into my acrylic paintings, the scenes of my home and similar settings have been my primary focus. Chairs and sofas are central to most of my paintings, implying social interchange and projecting warmth, comfort and hospitality. A bed has symbolic meaning as well, being the place of birth, of death, of procreation and every human emotion. Recent forays into landscapes and still-lifes have allowed me to carryover the style to different subject matter."
"My painting style is abstracted realism. In other words, it is clear what the subject matter is, but I represent the scenes in two dimensions and use color and pattern according to my own whim and fancy," says Zoole. "Characteristic of my paintings is the dark outlining of the shapes within the compositions."
Zoole is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Association and the South Carolina Watercolor Society. She has been juried into many regional shows winning various awards over my career. Zoole paints in her home studio in Spartanburg, SC. Her art has received many awards in juried exhibitions and has been shown in two-person and solo exhibits. Her work also appeared in several publications.
