Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Meredith Brickell and Lauren Van Hemert

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features two new exhibitions including: Pale Graze, featuring works by Meredith Brickell, in Artspace's Lobby, from Feb. 3 - 25, 2006, and Transitory Treasures: The Ephemera Collection, featuring works by Lauren Van Hemert in the Upfront Gallery, from Feb. 3 - 25, 2006.

Meredith Brickell

Meredith Brickell presents Pale Graze, an exhibition to mark the close of her Artspace Regional Emerging Artist Residency. Brickell draws from the physical realm, particularly from secluded spaces that encourage exploration and reflection. The work in this exhibition references not only the physical characteristics of these environments, but also the emotional connection she has to them.

Brickell received her Bachelor of Environmental Design from the School of Design at NC State University. After completing her undergraduate degree, she cultivated her interest in ceramics through the NC State Crafts Center. Brickell then earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in 2005 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before returning to Raleigh and being selected as Artspace's Regional Emerging Artist-In-Residence.

Ephemera is the window into our past. The contemporary definition of ephemera is "something short lived or transitory, especially all types of paper documents both printed or handwritten produced for a specific purpose and normally intended for disposal." Lauren Van Hemert's exhibition intends to explore the transitory treasures or everyday items often taken for granted, such as postage stamps, labels, posters, and advertisements - fleeting bits of a vanished or vanishing time - and reinvent them into a piece of wearable art for a modern age.

Lauren Van Hemert

Van Hemert's work has been featured in Cary Living Magazine, The Cary News, and in Lapidary Journal, as well as on HGTV's Crafter's Coast to Coast. She is a 2005 and 2006 Niche Award Finalist. Van Hemert lives in Cary with her husband and two children.
