February Issue 2006
Charleston Art & Portraits in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Bette Mueller-Roemer
Charleston Art & Portraits
in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Earth and Fire,
featuring Raku vessels by accomplished Charleston artist Bette
Mueller-Roemer. The exhibit will be on display from Feb. 11 through
Mar. 11, 2006.
"Rapid firing and cooling, inherent in the raku process,
produce marks of fire and smoke in my vessels," says Mueller-Roemer,
"and produce various effects in the glaze - from delicate
patterns of crackle to the shimmer of copper luster."
Cecile Langham Cothran, owner of the gallery, says, "Bette's
rich and exciting glazes are amazing. Those unfamiliar with
her work will be thrilled and awed by what the hands of this potter
are able to create."
A master of the raku process, Mueller -Roemer's credentials are
impressive. She earned a BA in Painting and Drawing from the University
of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. She has done graduate study
in Art History at UNC Chapel Hill and received her MA in Ceramics
and Art History from East Carolina University at Greenville, NC.
Mueller -Roemer's summer studies have included work at Penland
School of Crafts in eastern North Carolina, Arrowmont School of
Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN, Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris,
and Stage de Peinture in the Ardeche, France.
Mueller-Roemer has taught at Charleston Southern University; Stratford
High School in Goose Creek, SC; Gibbes Museum School, and Charleston
Clayworks, both in Charleston, and at Creative Spark in Mt. Pleasant,
SC.
Mueller-Roemer's exhibitions have included paintings, drawings, handmade journals, and Raku clay works, shown in galleries and museums throughout South Carolina. She has held one-artist shows at Francis Marion College in Florence, SC, York County Museum in Rock Hill, SC, the Charleston City Gallery and Charleston County Library, both in Charleston.
Mueller-Roemer's work is in the SC State Art Collection, the permanent collection at Erskine College in Due West, SC, and in many private collections.
"I studied under
Bette in the mid eighties, and so it gives me great pleasure that
she has entrusted this show to my gallery," says Cothran. "I
love saying that she taught me to throw a pot!"
