The College of Charleston's School of the Arts in Charleston, SC, Offers Sale of Antique Prints of Flora and Fauna
The College of Charleston's
School of the Arts will host an exhibition and sale of antique
prints featuring the flora and fauna of the southeastern US and
the Caribbean. A portion of all sales will benefit the College's
School of the Arts. The exhibition will take place at the Blacklock
House, on the College of Charleston's campus in historic downtown
Charleston, SC, from Feb. 17 - 19, 2006.
In addition, Gilbert Johnston, founder and owner of Antique Nature
Prints, will present a lecture on Feb. 17 entitled, Passion
for Nature: The 17th-19th Century Scientific Art of Natural History
(emphasis on Mark Catesby and John James Audubon). It will take
place at 7pm in the Simons Center for the Arts, Room 309 with
a reception and sale preview following.
Educated Europeans and
Americans of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries shared a remarkable
passion to learn about nature. This curiosity, a result of the
previous century's geographical exploration of new lands and the
ongoing worldwide trade and exploration, created a golden age
for the interaction of science and art.
