Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Mary B. Kelly
The Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, will present the exhibit, Hand Spun, Hand Dyed, Hand Woven, featuring three-dimensional work of local artist and weaver Mary B. Kelly, at the Art League's gallery, through Feb., 25, 2006.
Kelly will display hand
woven work in wool, cotton, sea-island cotton and other
fibers. Pillows, small area rugs, wall hangings, coverlets and
shawls will be for sale.
For more than 20 years
an artist and professor of art, Kelly has researched pre-Christian
motifs on the embroidery and weaving of Eastern Europe. She lectures,
conducts workshops and publishes articles in
scholarly journals and textile publications such as: Threads,
Fiberarts and Piecework. She has received 3 Fulbright grants
and several IREX grants to further her work in Eastern Europe.
Kelly has also traveled there to work in museums on collaborative
projects.
Kelly is the author
of several books on embroideries. Her most recent work is contained
in Folk Dress in Europe and Anatolia: Beliefs about
Protection and Fertility edited by Dr. Linda Welters and published
in 1999.
Kelly is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and Syracuse
University. She
lectured at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, conference,
Common Threads: Creating a Cloth for Empowerment, in 1999,
and in San Diego at the Mingei Museum of Folk Art, she spoke on
Slovak Rituals and Ritual Cloth in 2000 at the conference
titled Dowry. At the Czech and
Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids, IA, she again addressed the conference,
Kroje: Preserving and Uniting Cultures through Textiles,
in 2002.
Kelly is a weaver and
spinner as well as a fine artist. She lives in Hilton Head, where
she addresses local groups, teaches and leads
travel tours.
Kelly will hold a spinning demonstration on Feb. 8, 2006, from 5-7pm. Warm refreshments will be served and Kelly will also hold a book signing and sale of her textile books: Goddess Embroideries of Eastern Europe, Goddess Embroideries of the Balkan Lands and the Greek Islands, and Making and Using Ritual Cloths.
