Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features Works by Tom Maté
The Hickory Museum of
Art in Hickory, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Tom Maté
_ Counterpoint: Color ...the World in His Colors, featuring
works by Tom Maté in its upcoming Local Artist Series through
Apr. 9, 2006, in the Museum's first floor Gifford Gallery.
Maté, born and raised in Cleveland, OH, came to Hickory
twenty-one years ago to pursue a career in the furniture industry.
Though he had a lifelong love and appreciation for art, it was
through his wife Jackie and her business, Maté Studio,
that he became inspired to paint. According to her, "in July
1997 he picked-up a pastel and has been painting ever since."
Maté portrays the beauty of nature in its simplest form
in abstracts of brilliantly colored landscapes and seascapes inspired
by actual places but created purely from his own mind's eye. Hushed,
yet intense shades of indigo, crimson and emerald bring his surreal
renderings to life. Maté loves rich color and uses it in
unexpected ways to surprise and delight the eye. He has experimented
with watercolor and acrylics, but his favorite medium is still
pastels. This self-taught artist exhibition Tom Mate- Counterpoint:
Color will share the artist's vibrant interpretation of nature's
light, color and shadow.
