February Issue 2006
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, Celebrates 20 Years by Looking Back
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, begins the 2006 winter season with a retrospective of works by five gallery artists from Virginia: John Clingempeel, Michael Farrar, Susan Jamison, John Morgan, and Aggie Zed. Retrospective: Five Virginians will be on view through Feb. 28, 2006.
John Clingempeel's works
in charcoal and encaustic (wax and pigment) are deceptively simple
in appearance. Working with subtle gradations of light and shadow,
he creates powerful images that focus on the raw power of the
natural realm or reveal beauty in the linear forms of the man-made
world.
Michael Farrar's watercolors and works in mixed media are blatantly,
almost subversively humorous, but his sophisticated compositions
require more than a casual glance of the viewer. The works demonstrate
his mastery of line, shape, and color.
Susan Jamison uses egg tempera and oil glazes to produce works
that seduce the eye with refined surfaces. The images of layered
natural forms create a veil of pattern that entice the eye and
invite prolonged consideration of their many meanings.
John Morgan's assemblages recall the work of 20th century artists
who used mundane objects to create objects that are greater than
the sum of their parts. Juxtaposed with one another, they cause
the viewer to consider new interpretations of familiar forms.
Aggie Zed, a native of South Carolina, builds small sculptures
from wire, clay, and found objects and creates drawings with ink
and pastels. Her dreamlike imagery reveals a personal world that
seems to be obscure but which is full of meaning.
