February Issue 2007

Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Myles Little

The Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Do the Right Thing: My Friend's Life in College, featuring black and white photography by Myles Little. The exhibition will be on view from Feb. 1- 28, 2007.

Little offered the following statement about this exhibit: "This is the story of a young man I met in college. As I came to know him more and more, I became very interested in his life's story and came to see him as a viable role model for today's inner city youth. My friend grew up poor with his single mother in Rochester, New York. His father had left the family to  pursue a life of drugs. His neighborhood was dangerous and offered little support for young people who were interested in bettering themselves. His classmates in high school called him names for wanting to do well in school so he could get out of Rochester."

"But he must have had a huge amount of self-discipline because he succeeded in doing all this and more," says Little. "He was accepted to a prestigious art school in Savannah, GA, where he is now studying video game design and sound design. But the interesting thing for me is how similar my friend is to many other normal young black men. He loves going out to the club with friends, listening to rap music and playing basketball and he still has a great sense of humor. My friend proved that ordinary people can sometimes do extraordinary things."
