Clemson University in Clemson, SC, Offers Sculpture in a Shoebox
Good things do come
in small packages. That's just what you'll find when you visit
the 9th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition, featuring
82 small sculptures from around the world, on view at Clemson
University's Lee Gallery through Feb. 23, 2007.
Each artist participating in the exhibit was challenged to work
within the space and scale dictated by the size of an ordinary
shoebox. An invitation-only exhibition, this triennial has attracted
a large number of well-known artists from the US and around the
world.
As each sculpture speaks for itself, almost every imaginable medium - metal, wood, glass, fiber, paper, clay, found objects, beads, feathers, and hair is utilized in their construction. Collectively the sculptures are a powerful commentary on the state of humankind at the end of a century driven by industry and technology and at the beginning of a new millennium that is already marked with strife, uncertainties, and tragedies.
The 9th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition is organized by the University of Hawaii Art Gallery and supported in part by a grant from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
In response to the 9th International Shoebox Exhibition, Clemson Professor David Detrich has organized The 1st Clemson Shoebox Exhibition of 16 works to be on view from Feb. 12 - 23, 2007, in the MFA Gallery in Lee Hall.
