February Issue 2007
North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, Offers Group Exhibition
The Gallery of Art & Design at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, is pleased to announce the opening of The Natural World, a group exhibition featuring Seagrove, NC, potters Bruce Gholson and Samantha Henneke of Bulldog Pottery and Fred Johnston and Carol Gentithes of Johnston and Gentithes Art Pottery with Raleigh papermaker and installation artist Ann Marie Kennedy. The exhibit will be on view through May 13, 2007.
These artists challenge our expectations and thus propel us with gentle energy to experience the daily, the ordinary and the life outside their windows that they have transformed. Like Emily Dickinson, whose poetry takes its essence from the complexity of the closely observed and the close to home, these five artists present us with work of keen clarity, directness and elegant simplicity that conceals its complexity to the natural world and to our experiences. The objects counter our immersion in a world where structures, processes, materials and technology separate us from even the most mundane experiences like rain or fog or bugs in the garden. Revealed through the work are simple and direct truths that, like the work itself, are really not simple at all but as complex and varied as human nature, our nature, the natural world.
On Feb. 8, 2007, at 7pm a gallery talk with Ann Marie Kennedy entitled - Potters & Their Sources, will take place. All programs are free and open to the public.
