Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, Features Works by Sandra S. Rowland and Clay Exhibit
Sandra S. Rowland
The Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, is presenting two new exhibitions including: Art IS Action: Art Quilts by Sandra S. Rowland and Carolina Clay: A Celebration of North Carolina's Craft Heritage, both on view through Mar. 17, 2007.
Sandra Rowland's art quilts range is size, style and color. About her work, she says, "Expression is the heart of it and fiber is my chosen media. Fiber works for me because: it's easy to get, low in cost, portable, current, familiar, can be altered, and is THE feminist media. It can have color and fabulous images and pictures, or one can add any/all of these. And it has many glorious textures!" Rowland lives and works in Murphy, NC, and is a member of Southern Highlands Craft Guild.
These exhibits are sponsored in part by Grassroots funding from the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, distributed through the Cultural Arts Council of Wilkes. The Gallery is very appreciative of their generous support of our organization and mission to provide quality educational experiences through exhibits, classes, workshops and field trips for all ages. WAG promotes art as a necessary and enriching component of a well-rounded life.
The exhibit, Carolina Clay: A Celebration of North Carolina's Craft Heritage, featuring works by over 35 contemporary North Carolina potters and historical works from potters across North Carolina.
North Carolina's rich heritage of handcraft is celebrated through clay and the ceramic tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Few people recognize Wilkes County's historical impact on that clay tradition. The Wilkes Art Gallery is pleased to pair historic works from local and regional potteries with works from living, working North Carolina potters to depict the evolution of the working potter.
Works representing the major North Carolina pottery regions are included in the exhibit. From Wilkes County, works dating to the late 1800s from the Ballard, Sebastian and Kennedy potteries will be displayed. Examples of Catawba Valley and Seagrove area potteries are also represented. Historic works on display are loaned from Jerry and Denise Sidden, Ginnie Story, Diane Eller, Gary Lee, Harvey and Ginger Barlow, Derek and Mary Gwen Welborn, Ken and Laura Welborn and Jeffrey and Kara Elmore.
Participating potters will be exhibiting a variety of works and styles depicting the wide range of clay as an artistic and functional medium. Exhibiting potters include Walter Aberson, Debbie Black, Joyce Branch, J. Broome, Ine van den Bosch, Patti Bryan, Sylvia Coppola, Adrienne Dellinger, Pam Dolin, Glenda McAlexander, Keith Myers, May Sanders, Liz lee, Jo Maddox, Darla Hudson, Greg Scott, V.
