Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Students from Southern Women's Colleges

The Milliken Gallery at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, will serve as the host site for the 2008 Southern Women's Colleges Art Exhibition, on view from Feb. 11 through Mar. 2, 2008. This collaborative exhibition will showcase nearly 25 pieces by 20 students from Brenau University (Gainesville, GA), Converse College, Hollins University (Roanoke, VA) and Salem College (Winston-Salem, NC).

"We think that we have received works that have a wide variety of subject and medium," said Converse junior Jessica Looney who is coordinating the exhibition with fellow junior Elizabeth Roberds. "Each of the participating colleges could submit up to ten works which were chosen by the art departments at the individual schools. They are all works completed by women, but that is the only similarity that they share."

Mediums to be featured include watercolor, ebony pencil, charcoal, oil on wood, oil on canvas, digital photography, monotype, monoprint, a cheesecloth, oil and gel transfer and others.

Founded in 1889 and located in the heart of Spartanburg home to six colleges and 13,000 college students Converse helps women develop the skills necessary to balance a full life. Students develop their unique voices through our challenging liberal arts curriculum, century-old honor tradition, and Daniels Center for Leadership and Service. Our close-knit residential community cultivates a spirit of sisterhood and enterprise among women diverse in backgrounds and interests. Across the board from art and design to science, business, music and education professors actively mentor and challenge students through spirited discussions inside and outside of the classroom. The Nisbet Honors Program, Petrie School of Music, independent and collaborative research opportunities, leading national debate teams, study abroad and internship programs, and a 9:1 student/faculty ratio differentiate the Converse learning community.

Converse competes in NCAA Division II athletics the highest level of any women's college, is the only women's college on the All-Steinway School roster, and is consistently top ranked by US News & World Report.
