February Issue 2008

Furman University in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Kathryn Myers

Furman University in Greenville, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Obscure and Common Duties, featuring a collection of photography and paintings by University of Connecticut art professor Kathryn Myers. The exhibit will be on view at Furman University's Thompson Art Gallery, located in the Roe Art Building, through Feb 22, 2008.

Obscure and Common Duties is a collection of photography and paintings inspired by Myers' trips to India. The subjects in her paintings are of Indian people doing ordinary, everyday activities, including praying, washing clothes and bathing. Most of the paintings are gouache on antique Indian paper; others are done in watercolor or oil paint.

Myers has been teaching at the University of Connecticut since 1984. Her current figurative paintings as well as photographs and digital works are primarily based on research in the art and culture of India. She has exhibited her work in venues in the United States, Europe and Asia; including recent exhibitions at Aurodhan Gallery, Pondicherry India, Fundacao Oriente, Panaji, India, Lenore Gray Gallery, Providence, RI, and the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT.

Awards, fellowships and artist's residencies include The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation, Fundacao Valpraiso, a Fulbright Fellowship to India, and Connecticut Commission on the Arts Individual Artist's Grant. She has been the curator of several exhibitions on South Asian art and serves on the board of the University of Connecticut India Studies program.
