The City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Presents Photography by Leslie Burns Later in March
The City Gallery of the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of silver gelatin prints by local artist Leslie Burns from Mar. 24 through Apr. 18, 2000, entitled Mummeries.
Burns is a 24 years-old artist originally from Florence, SC. She studied photography under Michelle Van Parys at the College of Charleston. She received a BA in Studio Art in May 1999. Also in May 1999, she won third place in the 1999 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition. Burns currently works as an assistant to a professional photographer. She plans to further her education in photography.
Burns comments on her work: "My non-traditional self-portraiture is an introspective, focusing on my personal, subjective identity quest. My images are honest and candid manifestations of my emotions, memories and fears, revealing my true self and my process of coming into being. My attempts at self-exploration, self-definition and self-revelation activate the space around me. I am what I become and only exist as a result of this process. My environments have a definite artificiality, though all elements of the images are real and relate to me on a personal level. I create compositions of objects and memories from seemingly insignificant experiences of my everyday surroundings, unveiling details within each part. Experience of the spectator is central. The photographs have a voyeuristic nature of these images which invites the viewers to reach their own conclusions. Viewers are to immerse themselves in the images. The meaning comes as they experience it."
