March Issue 2000
Youth Art Month at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County in Camden, SC
The Bassett Gallery of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County in Camden, SC, will present an exhibit featuring works by Kershaw County student artists from March 2 through Mar. 26, 2000.
The exhibit is reflective of the quality of arts education programs taught in schools across Kershaw County. Originally the art works included in the exhibit were chosen from middle and high schools, but now the show pulls from all grade levels. The work is juried at the individual schools. The exhibit features 2-D and 3-D artistic creations by the students. According to FAC staff member Liza Van Horn, "There has been a beehive of activity over the past few months by the students. Art instructors have been contacted, schools have been notified and students have polished up their works to be judged and beamed upon by all who come to see the talent that is represented in our gallery this month. Each year the body of work, the skills and the creativity improve. After graduating, students today are better prepared for college level art classes than before."
Originally started by the Camden Art Association, the competition began 29 years ago as a memorial to Lee VanDevort, a member of the CAA who specialized in paintings and drawings of animals, especially dogs and horses. By creating a competition, CAA members hoped to encourage young people to increase their powers of observation and appreciation of animals while improving their artistic skills. Through the years, as more instruction has been offered in schools, subject matter, media and skills have become more varied and accomplished.
