March Issue 2000
Morris Gallery in Columbia, SC, Presents Photography by Julia Cart
Morris Gallery in Columbia, SC, announces an
exhibition of photography by Charleston artist Julia Cart. The
exhibit featuring her current collection will be on view from
Mar. 9 through Apr. 6, 2000.
Cart's work is driven by her passion for historic and environmental
preservation, vernacular architecture and the work of early photographers,
like Julia Margaret Cameron. Cart works exclusively in black-and-white
with medium and large format cameras. She prints her images in
silver and in platinum/palladium.
Cart stated that these pieces are a culmination of work beginning in 1997, when she worked with the South Carolina Arts Commission and its Artist-in-Residency program. This project took her to Lancaster, Orangeburg, Abbeville and Kingstree where she worked with local citizens interested in learning how the art of photography can heighten a community's awareness of its responsibility for preservation. "By making photographic images of places facing a certain extinction - whether by time's erasures or development's desecrations - I hope to aid in their preservation with the viewers' participation." If we look at the Latin meaning for "preserve", we find that it means to "observe beforehand" and then, "to protect; to save". This collection of over twenty-five photographs document the fragility and grandeur of the architecture and landscapes throughout South Carolina.
