YMI Cultural Center in Asheville, NC, Presents Quilts by Peggie Hartwell
The YMI Cultural Center in Asheville, NC, will host an exhibition of narrative quilts by African American quilt artist Peggie Hartwell. A Quilter's Spirit: An African American Quilt Tradition opens Mar. 1 and continues through May 5, 2000.
Originally from South Carolina, Hartwell, now living in New York City, is known internationally for her vivid picture story quilts, which pay tribute to the ancestral contributions to African Americans lives.
In Hartwell's quilt, Ode to Harriet Powers she celebrates the legendary quilter who was born into slavery in 1837 in Athens, GA with a heroic image of Powers surrounded by block designs adapted from her celebrated Bible quilt. Other quilts depict family and social life in the rural South.
Hartwell's works are in the permanent collections of the American Craft Museum and the National Afro Museum of Culture, and are in numerous private collections She has been the featured artist on PBS's Reading Rainbow hosted by LeVar Burton, that focused on Hartwell's quilting as it related to her family and the community where she was raised. Hartwell also had a nine-year career as a modern jazz Dunham dancer in Europe and the Middle East
Hartwell is active in a number of organizations, including Women of Color Quilter's Network (New York and National chapters) and the National Quilting Association.
