Photographs By Debbie Cooke On Exhibit At Furman's Thompson Gallery in Greenville, SC
A collection of recent photographs by Debbie Cooke, an instructor at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, will be on display in the Thompson Gallery of Furman University's Roe Art Building through Mar. 30 in Greenville, SC. The exhibit, Transfigurations, is a collection of pieces produced using the techniques of "Polacollage," hypertufa and digital photography.
Polacollage is a process of separating Polaroid film, removing chemicals to produce a transparency, and then layering collage images and paint behind the original photograph. The hypertufa pieces were created with concrete, allowed to age, and then Polaroid emulsion transferred to the surface. The digital images were photographed in Italy using 35mm infrared film, and then scanned and printed using archival inks and paper.
Cooke, a resident of Liberty, SC, teaches photography as an instructor at the Fine Arts Center. A graduate of Winthrop College with a BA in art, she received a MFA from Clemson University in mixed media with an emphasis on photography. In 1996-97, she served as the co-chair in visual art at the SC Governor's School for the Arts and from 1976-97 she was chair of the art department at Pickens High School. She has served as a consultant for the Polaroid Education Program, leading visual learning workshops to train educators in visual learning/photography in the classroom.
