Tony Hernandez & Carol Anthony At Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC

Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is pleased to announce their third solo exhibition for Tony Hernandez and their first solo exhibition for Carol Anthony. The exhibit will be on view from Mar. 2 until Apr. 14.

Tony Hernandez

Tony Hernandez was born in 1964 and raised in Atlanta, GA where he continues to live and work. He paints in encaustic and oil on wood and paper to create stark simplicity consisting of figures adrift in non-descript landscapes. His unusual technique involves a blow torch and large wood panels. Then the encaustic method is applied by repeatedly mixing pigments with hot bee's wax to fuse color and subtle texture to the wood grain. In comparison, the work on paper is rough and textural with torn edges, staple marks and noticeable brush strokes from the wax application. Hernandez continues to examine the social issues in our society about separation, isolation, hope and salvation.

Carol Anthony

Carol Anthony was born in New York in 1943 and now lives and works in Santa Fe, NM. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Working primarily with oil crayon, Anthony creates landscapes, interiors and still lifes that are charged with a palpable presence-hovering on a fine, luminous line between the material and the spiritual. Anthony uses her fingers instead of brushes to manipulate the oil crayons on panel and papers and adds actual dog hairs from her animals to represent a springing forth of spirit and the ritual of letting go and remembering.
