Commissioned Posters at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC
A display of 24 posters commissioned as covers for the Paris Review is now on exhibit in the Williamson and Preyer galleries at Charlotte's Mint Museum of Art through June 24, 2001.
The literary magazine Paris Review was founded in 1952 as a forum for the poetry and fiction of established and emerging writers. The magazine's editors commissioned a series of cover "posters" by major contemporary artists in 1965 thanks to the support of Mrs. Henry J. Heinz. Each print was produced under the supervision of the artist in signed and numbered editions of 150.
The collection contains screen prints and two lithographs by recognized Pop and Minimalist artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Chryssa, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Robert Indiana and Ellsworth Kelly. The series of thirty-four prints was originally distributed by Poster Originals, Ltd. of New York, NY and later circulated as a traveling exhibition by The American Federation of Arts. The Mint Museum's Paris Review posters were purchased in 1977 from a local, anonymous collector with funds provided by the Mint Museum Auxiliary.
Art by Commission: Paris Review Posters is in collaboration with The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County during the run of their exhibition Works by Warhol from the Cochran Collection in the Library Gallery uptown.
