Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Presents Works by Betty Anglin Smith

Smith-Killian Fine Art welcomes the public to the first show in the new gallery, Sea Islands by Carolina native Betty Anglin Smith. The show opens Mar. 23, and will run through early April. This current collection of paintings will feature large landscapes and medium canvases, as well as a new series of smaller works on paper that are a bit more abstract than her typical bold style.

While not a departure from the series of coastal landscapes that she's been studying for the last ten years, Sea Islands was inspired by a slightly different area than the islands of the South Carolina Lowcountry. A trip that began as a source for relaxation to the islands off the coast of Georgia soon evolved into inspiration for a new series of works. The artist says that she considers this area very much a part of the same coastal system that surrounds the South Carolina low lands, as the marshes, palmettos, and coastal wetlands continue down the southeastern coast from the Charleston area. Once there, she discovered a more golden light and warmer colors than what she had been accustomed to, both of which are reflected in her sweeping landscapes of this series.

Continuing in her tradition of working in vibrant colors and with bold, exaggerated brushstrokes, Smith captures the beauty of expansive landscapes as successfully as ever. "I can't emphasize enough, I want my work to look quick, impulsive, and spontaneous, like it just happened and flowed, as opposed to appearing overworked," says the artist. She adds that she enjoys exaggerating the bold colors that she sees in the landscape. "I want my work to be expressionistic but also remain in the realm of reality."

The artist is also continuing to show nationally, with Carmel, CA, being a main focus on the western coast. In August, her work will be featured at the Trajan Gallery in her annual showing there.
