Winston-Salem State University Features Works by Faculty and Alumni

Winston-Salem State University's Diggs Gallery, in Winston-Salem, NC, presents WSSU: A Legacy in Fine Art, on view through Mar. 31, to honor the artists and instructors who have contributed to the study and creation of fine art on the WSSU Campus.

The exhibition will feature the work of more than 30 faculty, former faculty members, students and alumni, recognizing their contributions to the university and to American Art. The exhibition will include works by Selma Burke, Hayward Oubré, Eva Miller and James T. Diggs, the former art department professor for whom Diggs Gallery is named. The exhibition includes Burke's Italian alabaster Peace (donated to WSSU by Winston-Salem Delta Fine Arts, Inc.), å and a bronze female torso (both donated to WSSU by Dr. Maya Angelou).

The show also offers a rare opportunity to view the works of renowned artist, Hayward Oubré. Oubré is known as a master printmaker, painter, and for his exceptional wire sculptures. He is celebrated for the advancements he made to the field of modern color theory, having corrected the color triangle previously perpetuated by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Oubré received a patent in 1975 for his three-intensity color wheel which he substantiated with mathematics. In the lobby of the O'Kelly Library stands a wire sculpture ram created by this exceptional artist.

Recent works by former art professor Mitzi Shewmake, the first director of Diggs Gallery, are also included. Other faculty and former faculty presented are Marvette Aldrich, Roland Watts, Teresa Unseld and Faith Heller.

WSSU's list of prominent arts alumni include Michael Cunningham, Arcenia Davis, Leon Woods, Jerry Lee Hanes, Ricardo Lewis, Robin Leftwich and Sandy Robertson. Many local artists have also been among the ranks of WSSU instructors, including: Vandorn Hinnant, James Huff, Duncan Lewis, Justine Linville, Charles McClennahan, Jim McMillan, Richard Montgomery, Henry Sumpter, Lloyd Bennett and recent Sawtooth Center "Artist of the Year" award winner Ed Shewmake.
