Furman University in Greenvile, SC, Hosts Works by Mana Hewitt and Steve Cole
An art exhibit featuring paintings by Mana Hewitt, instructor and gallery director at University of South Carolina, and 3-D works by Steve Cole, art professor at Birmingham-Southern College, will be on display Mar. 4-27, 2002, in the Thompson Gallery at Furman University's Roe Art Building in Greenville, South Carolina.
Hewitt's exhibit, Illumination, features mixed media paintings executed on wood with gold leaf. "This series has evolved from a concept of creating a visual enigma by hiding tattooed figures positioned before similarly patterned backgrounds," she said.
Local, regional and national venues have exhibited Hewitt's works, and her art has earned numerous awards. In addition, Hewitt has received three artist grants from the South Carolina Arts Commission. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Columbia Museum of Art (SC), the William Lieberman Collection (NY) and many other collections.
Hewitt earned her bachelor's degree in arts and master's in fine arts at the University of South Carolina.
Steve Cole has presented lectures on art at a number of colleges, including the Minneapolis School of Design. He instructs drawing and painting at Birmingham-Southern College. "Art and play are essential," said Cole. "It just so happens I combine both."
Cole earned a bachelor's and master's in art education at Ball State University. He earned a second master's in studio art at Florida State University.
