Shain Fine Art in Charlotte, NC, Hosts Works by Robert Marshall and Downy Doxey-Marshall
Shain Fine Art in Charlotte, NC, will present an exhibition entitled, Landscapes, A Reflection of Consciousness, by Robert Marshall of Utah and Icons of Domesticity, by Downy Doxey- Marshall of Scottsdale, AZ. The exhibitions continue through Mar. 30, 2002.
Robert Marshall received a BA and MA from Brigham
Young University, where he is now head of the Art Department.
He has won numerous awards and has works included in many corporate
and private collections. Robert Marshall's often-oversized canvases
mirror the reflective qualities and movement of water surfaces
that emulates and stimulates human reverie and, if you will, reflection.
"The Utah landscape has provided inspiration for my work
since moving to this state in 1969. The interest however, has
not been with the spectacular, panoramic vistas so often portrayed,
but rather, the intimate wetland areas where one finds solitary
fulfillment through private dialogue with the patterns, colors
and textures that usually go unnoticed," says Robert Marshall.
"It has been my experience that there is, at times, an inverse proportional relationship between the grandiose versus the intimate. Awareness of the intrinsic (and I believe lasting) beauty of a particular location is always intensified through private rather than collective discovery."
Robert Marshall also tells us, "These are the inner landscapes of the heart, the landscapes that include the self as an active participant, the landscapes that connect us back to ourselves. Nature is more complex, illusive and unpredictable than any abstraction. It is continuously transformed by light, and translated, through individual eyes, to our ways of knowing. Certainty is confirmed through our involvement with the ambiguities. I believe this is at the heart of my work. The response to this work continues to confirm its capacity to engage people on multiple levels. The aesthetic is compelling without confusing; understandable and yet intriguing, offering immediate as well as sustained, interest in the image, the process and the formal order."
Downy Doxey-Marshall received her BFA at the
University of Utah and MFA at Brigham Young University. She paints
in the rarely used media of egg tempera. In her paintings - chairs
converse, wallpaper laughs, lamps tell secrets, and sofas absorb
commonplace cares.
Downy Doxey-Marshall offers a look at the processes involved in
her work:
"I paint with egg tempera, using a technique I developed by researching early Renaissance Masters. Egg tempera is a very free medium. The egg is washable and my technique pushes the pigment into depressions in the surface. The painting comes alive with depth and light. The pigment is applied in many layers, defining furnishings in spaces."
"Holding a small board in one hand I spread the paste like frosting with a spatula. Smoothing areas and weaving ridges and peaks the knife scumbles across the surface. A menagerie of children's toys and household items are pressed into the surface. Stained glass is randomly placed on each panel. With pastry tips I put on the finishing touches. The more I can respond to a rich surface the more unpredictable the finished painting will be. The purest art is a departure from mere illustration and is understood by the subconscious."
