March Issue 2002
UNC-Charlotte's Rowe Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Winston Tite
Winston Tite, Associate Professor of Art at
UNC-Charlotte and coordinator of the Department of Art's Sculpture
program, will exhibit newly completed sculptures in the Main Gallery
of Rowe Arts in Charlotte, NC, through Mar. 22, 2002.
This new work, constructed predominately of wood and steel, continues
his exploration of linear form, producing sculptures consisting
of linear elements interacting with wall, ceiling, and/or floor
representations or other objects within the space to create the
illusion that the linear form is exploring its surroundings.
These large mixed-media constructed sculptures were inspired by the commissioned public art sculpture he completed in 1998 at the North County Regional Library in Huntersville, NC. In this very large suspended steel piece, the linear elements explore various aspects of the library's architecture, deflecting off windows and walls, encircling the ceiling fan while also enjoying the exploration of the library's large and open interior space. In his new work, his desire was to capture that energy and experience in smaller, gallery compatible works that are not site-specific. Work in this new series of sculptures began in Fall 2000 and was made possible in part by a UNC Charlotte Research Leave in Spring 2001.
It should be noted that the University will be closed from Mar. 3 - 9, 2002, for Spring Break.
