March Issue 2003
Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, is Last Stop for Traveling Exhibition of Works by Mary Whyte
Discover South Carolina with Mary Whyte! From Mar. 5 through Apr. 5, 2003, Coleman Fine Art will present the exhibition, P is for Palmetto, featuring 28 original watercolor illustrations by Whyte, from the acclaimed children's book of the same name.
The exhibition will conclude it's 6-month journey across the state of South Carolina at Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC. The traveling exhibit opened in Beaufort, SC, in Sept. 2002, and stopped in Aiken, SC, the Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, and the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC, before returning to Charleston.
P is for Palmetto is a collection of descriptive rhyme and appealing watercolor images that covers this beautiful southeastern state from A to Z. Author Carol Crane captures the diverse features of South Carolina with her flowing verse and solid expository text, while Whyte's imaginative and colorful watercolor paintings add the perfect finishing touch. South Carolinians, young and old, will treasure P is for Palmetto, published by Sleeping Bear Press, and educators will find its two-tiered teaching format extremely useful in their classrooms.
Whyte is best known for her watercolor portraits and her Lowcountry Series, a moving collection of watercolors that depict the rich heritage and culture of the Gullah people. Her work is exhibited in over two hundred corporate, university, museum, and private collections. Whyte has been teaching for over twenty years and is the illustrator of more than a dozen children's books. She has written several feature articles for American Artist and Watercolor magazines. She is also the author of the popular instructional book, Watercolor for the Serious Beginner, published by Watson-Guptill and now in its fourth printing.
