March Issue 2003
Farvan International in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Mike Ryon
Farvan Internation in Charlotte, NC, is presenting an exhibition of works by Mike Ryon from Mar. 7 - 31, 2003.
Ryon grew up in New York and Chapel Hill, NC, in his formative years and has been living abroad on and off for the last decade. As a youth he was taken by both painterly art and exacting draftsmanship which helped guide him on to study architecture at North Carolina State University. After NCSU, Ryon served a tour of duty in Vietnam and then went to the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL, where he graduated in Commercial Design and Illustration.
Ryon's works are drawing national attention. His list of accomplishments are quite impressive starting with being accepted into the 2000 Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society (his work was on display at the exhibition shown on Fifth Avenue in NYC at the Salmagundi Club). In 1999 he was selected as a finalist in the 1999 Cambridge Art Association National Competition. He was one of nine watercolourists chosen out of 4,600 entries. The painting he entered was on display along with the other finalists at the Federal Reserve Bank Gallery, Boston, MA, for two months in the spring of 1999. The Jurors for this competition were very significant Peter Rathbone, Senior Vice President and Director of American Paintings and Sculpture Department at Sotheby's in New York; Eliza Rathbone, Chief Curator at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC; and Belinda Rathbone, Photography Historian, Curator and Biographer (who has contributed numerous scholarly essays to journals such as the J. Paul Getty Museum Journal).
Aside from several shows in Milan and Rome, Italy, Ryon is well-established in North Carolina including: a First Place winner & Bank of America Purchase award in the North Carolina Watercolor Society, 5-time First Place winner in Guild of Charlotte Artists' exhibitions, 6-time First Place winner in Union County Art League exhibitions, 3-time First Place winner at the Festival in the Park, as well as poster artist for SpringFest and Festifun.
