Somerhill Gallery Presents Sky and Water, With Artists Dan Miller & Elizabeth Thompson
Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, is proud to produce an exceptional pairing of artists on view through Mar. 28, 2003. The exhibition, Sky and Water, features oil and wax artworks on canvas by Dan Miller and oil on canvas works by Elizabeth Thompson.
Artist Dan Miller from Ohio, represented by Somerhill Gallery two years previous to this exhibit, will be featuring paintings on canvas with oil and wax. Depicting a big sky in a luminous light, his large scale interpretations of the landscape are distinguished by the appearance of a soft silhouette that stops short of the canvas' edge. This is a transition from the preliminary drawing in the artist's original sketch book where his initial compositions are laid out. Working with a nuanced light, the mysterious nature of Miller's landscapes evokes a familiarity to the viewer of a poetic instant in time.
Miller has received his Masters of Fine Art from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, in Baltimore. He has exhibited widely throughout the East as well as the Midwest, showing work at such galleries as the Art Center Gallery, in Warrensberg, MO, and the George Billis Gallery in New York City. Miller has received many awards for his stunning work, including the George S. Olive Purchase Award and the Catherine Grant Memorial Prize. His work is in the collections of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, the Biogen Corporation, and Central Carolina Bank.
Paired with Miller in this important exhibition will be large scale oil on canvases by New York artist Elizabeth Thompson. She has been represented by Somerhill Gallery for years. Thompson's light filled paintings feature interpretations of water and its infinite qualities of reflection, emergence, depth and characteristics illuminated by shifting light. Patterns found in nature are a recurring theme. Rice paddies or palm trees may resemble a mirror as reflected in the aqueous surface.
Thompson's formal education is from the Pratt Institute in New York, where she received a Master's of Fine Arts degree. She has also studied at the Ecole Nationale Superiure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Thompson has had many exhibitions both in the United States and abroad. Solo exhibitions include works shown at the Gallery Les Arts Plastiques Modernes in Paris, the Plan Gallery in Belgium, and the Andrew Crispo Gallery in New York.
Gallery Director Joseph Rowand recently commented that "Somerhill's history with both of these artists comes from having years of developing a network in the art world." Both artists Thompson and Miller were recommended to Rowand by the galleries representing them in their respective cities. "The bold strength of Dan Miller's clear big sky landscapes are a great contrast to Elizabeth Thompson's closer inspection of the fore and mid-ground landscape planes," continued Rowand. These dramatic, harmonious, and peaceful paintings will be an exciting visual adventure for both new and seasoned Somerhill Gallery goers.
