Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, Takes Shows On the Road
An era ends...and a new day dawns for the Upstairs Gallery, Tryon, North Carolina's venerable contemporary art space. After 16 years in the Town Hall Office Building, the gallery is closing the doors and taking its exhibits and other activities "on the road" until moving into a renovated building at 49 S. Trade Street later this year.
Citing increased expenses in operating out of the Town Hall complex, Dale McEntire, president of the Board of Directors, adds that meager foot traffic and limited parking contributed to the decision to vacate the old building. "It isn't fair to the great artists we represent to remain in the present location," says McEntire.
In a fantastic display of support and cooperation, three area galleries have invited the Upstairs to conduct art exhibits in their facilities over the next several months.
First, the Upstairs has an exhibit at the Silver Fox Gallery in Tryon opening on Mar. 1 and continuing through Apr. 12, 2003. Called Three Women with Figures, the show features figurative work by Teena Stern, sculptor, Kenson Thompson, painter and Anna Tomczak, photographer. The next Upstairs' exhibit will be a cooperative photography show at Tryon's Laurel Gallery in May and June. In July the Upstairs heads south to the Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, where a mixed media exhibit, Doors and Other Openings, opens on July 11, 2003.
"We are enormously indebted to these fine galleries to help us through a time of transition," says Nancy Holmes, executive director of the Upstairs.
The Upstairs Gallery was founded in 1978 by a group of experimental artists who first exhibited their work in one of their homes -upstairs, naturally. The gallery had three more "upstairs" locations before moving into the Town Hall complex. The new Upstairs facility will more than double the gallery's exhibition space. "We're planning to celebrate our 25th anniversary by throwing a great party when we move," says Holmes.
