Beaufort Art Association Spring Exhibit in 43rd Year as Showcase for Local Artists in Beaufort, SC
What began as a sidewalk art show and sale organized by a small group of Beaufort Art Association (BAA) members 43 years ago has grown to become the largest, most anticipated art competition and sale in the Beaufort, SC, region. The BAA Spring Exhibit and Sale attracts both artists and art lovers.
The 2004 Spring Exhibit opens Mar. 17 and runs through Mar. 28 at the Greene Street Art and Activities Center in Beaufort, SC. All entries are for sale. In the past, gross sales from the exhibit have exceeded $12,000.
The Spring Exhibit is non-juried. It is open to BAA members and non-members alike and provides regional artists with a showcase for their work and rewards for their talents. All entries must be completely original.
Last year over 140 Lowcountry artists entered a total of 258 works which included oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, drawings, hand-pulled prints, photography, fiber art, digital and computer-generated art, pottery, sculpture, mixed media and assemblage.
Thirty awards totaling more than $5000 are customarily presented to winners chosen by a guest judge. This year's judge is Susan Tregay, of Rockford, IL. A nationally recognized watercolorist, Tregay's skills as a juror and instructor are highly sought across the US and Canada with more than 70 workshops, critiques and demos to her credit.
Tregay's distinctive work hangs in 34 corporate galleries and has won her seven national and 15 top regional awards. She is a juried and signature member of both the National Watercolor Society and the Transparent Watercolor Society (formerly the Midwest Watercolor Society).
Following the Spring Exhibit, top winners will be featured at the BAA Gallery in downtown Beaufort from Apr. 1 through May 9, 2004.
Spring Exhibit co-chairs this year are Sally Kohonoski and Pam Hagan, who have chaired the show for the past two years.
A non-profit organization, the BAA is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives funding from the National Endowment for the Arts; by the Donnelley Foundation; by the Arts Council of Beaufort County; by City and County Accommodations tax revenues; and by private donations. All donations to the BAA are tax-deductible.
