March Issue 2004
Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC,
Presents Youth Art Exhibition
The Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, is presenting the
exhibit, Youth Art Celebration 2004, from Mar. 3 through June
13, 2004.
The exhibit features works by students from sixteen school districts
and nine different institutions of higher education. The student
works represent regions from all areas of the state and are based
on a lesson plan focused on the process of using materials in
an innovative way. The media in the works is as diversified as
the grade levels of the students. Out of the works exhibited in
the Columbia Museum of Art's Education Gallery, the State Department
of Education will select pieces to become part of the collection
to be exhibited in the halls of the Rutledge building. Fourteen
of the students will have their work reproduced on 1500 posters
and along with the lesson plan, will have them distributed to
every school, superintendent, and legislator in the state. Additionally,
they will receive national attention through the Delegates Assembly
at the National Art Education Association Conference to be held
in Denver in April.
The South Carolina Art Education Association advocates aesthetic
growth and quality performance in art and makes a connection with
it to other disciplines. One of the organization's goals is to
communicate the role of visual art in the schools and communities
and increase parental and local involvement. The result of this
dedication is in the quality of the student's artwork.
