Gibbes Museum of
Art in Charleston, SC, Presents Illustrations by Marjorie Flack
from Classic Tale by DuBose Heyward
The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, announces the opening
of the exhibition, The Country Bunny: A Union of Word and Image,
in the Harwood Lounge of the Museum on Mar. 16, 2004. This special
exhibition highlights illustrations by artist Marjorie Flack of
DuBose Heyward's classic children's story The Country Bunny
and the Little Gold Shoes.
DuBose Heyward (American, 1885- 1940) was a businessman absorbed
in his Charleston heritage. A Charleston native by birth, Heyward
worked on Charleston's waterfront where he became fascinated with
Gullah culture. It is this culture that offered the background
for the majority of Heyward's literary works, including his first
novel, Porgy.
Heyward spent several summers at the MacDowell Colony for artists
in New Hampshire. It was at the MacDowell Colony that he met Marjorie
Flack, a well-known author and illustrator of children's books.
Flack convinced Heyward to record the bedtime story he invented
for his young daughter Jenifer about an ambitious mother rabbit
and her family. In just one morning Heyward wrote the story that
became known as The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes.
This classic children's story was Heyward's only children's book.
The Country Bunny: A Union of Word and Image features 13
of Flack's original black and white illustrations as they appear
in The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes. Flack bequeathed
the illustrations to the Museum's permanent collection in 1946.
This exhibition marks the third time this collection of illustrations
have been on public view.
The Country Bunny: A Union of Word and Image will be on
view through Apr. 18, 2004. Special exhibition tours for children
and school groups are available. Please contact Gibbes School
