March Issue 2004
Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC,
Features Works by Joe Walters
Joie Lassiter Gallery, will present an exhibit on the ground floor
of the Odell Building in Uptown Charlotte, NC. The exhibition
will be on view through Mar. 26, 2004, featuring works by Joe
Walters, selected from the exhibition, High Tide, (from
the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art Summer 2003 Exhibition).
Walters, a regional artist from Charleston, SC, works with intricate
and complex natural forms. Shifting between formalism and realism,
his flora and fauna forms are grouped in grids and clusters asking
the viewer to create associations and a semblance of order for
the course of nature.
Born in Morehead, KY, Walters received a BA in Art, at Morehead
State University and a MFA in Sculpture, from East Carolina University,
in Greenville, NC.
Process plays an integral role in Walters's work. It would seem
to be that process is an important role for all art making, yet
for "process-art" the act of being made by materials
is more evident. Walters uses uncommon material such as tea, bleach
and polyurethane to capture a specific impression. A drawing is
made where Walters creates a template by puncturing holes, encompassing
the drawing. Tea staining creates the appearance of being aged.
To preserve this appearance of "being aged" or "passing
of time", he permeates the surface with polyurethane, thus
fossilizing, or freezing its status.
This procedure is extremely physical yet vital. "Process-art"
takes advantage of incidents, character of material, happenings,
either by nature or man. Evidence of process and accidental marks
are seen in Walters's work on paper, creating a tension between
"control and happenstance".
Aesthetically, the work has an ancient quality, an unearthed characteristic
due likely to Walters's early interest in archaeology. The encrusted
appearance possesses an integrity and elegance that come with
age. In this particular group of work, Walters has concentrated
on emphasizing the fact that "no single species is more significant
than the other". Walters's work does not replicate nature
but is more of an interpretation or reference.
Walters is widely shown throughout the Southeast, Florida and
New York.
