Parkway Craft Center in Blowing Rock, NC, Reopens for 2004
On Mar. 15, 2004, the Parkway Craft Center, located at Milepost 294 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Blowing Rock, NC, will open its doors to begin the 53rd season at Moses Cone Manor. Visitors enjoy a marriage of spectacular views, Georgian Revival architecture and stunning handmade crafts. Parkway is one of five shops of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and features work from over 300 Southern Appalachian crafts people. Work includes clay, glass, leather, fiber, jewelry, wood, natural materials, paper and metal. Whether you are looking for a special accent piece for your home or a unique gift for a special occasion, you will find the perfect selection. Gift certificates along with a newly created gift registry are available, as well.
The Moses Cone Manor house, completed in 1901, is a spectacular piece of period architecture popping out of the mountain landscape. The entrance is a shady road that is private and relaxing. The house is an awesome sight even from the back as you park. The walk down the steps brings you to the breath-taking view of Bass Lake below and the surrounding mountains accented by the always changing sky. Then the covered porch with its rocking chairs invites you to relax and enjoy the fresh air and views. All this would be enough to take in, but there is still more to come! The crafts housed inside the manor are inherently beautiful and are artfully displayed by our talented and friendly staff. The combination of the Georgian Revival architecture and the beauty of the crafts offers something for everyone.
Several special focus events will be offered this year at the Craft Center. Apr. 10, 2004, will bring the ³Egg Scramble on the Manor House Lawn²; an egg hunt for children ages 2 15. Age categories will be defined so all children will be able to have fun. A scavenger hunt, orchestrated by the National Park Service, will be available to challenge teenagers. Special prizes will be awarded in each age group. Bring your own egg basket, please. Craft demonstrations are scheduled on a regular basis throughout the year. For other special events please contact the craft center.
