March Issue 2004
Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston,
SC, Features Works by Bob Snead
Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston, SC, is presenting
the exhibition, stuff i own and people i know, featuring
new works by Bob Snead, on view through Mar. 12, 2004.
Snead was born in Charleston, SC. A Cum Laude honor graduate of
the College of Charleston, Snead received his BA in Studio Art
in 2002. While growing up in Charleston, he saw the overwhelming
need for a contemporary art center in the city. Thus shortly after
graduating, he founded Redux Contemporary Art Center with the
assistance of other local artists including Bill Bolton, Seth
Gadsden, and Krist Mills.
Snead has participated in many regional and national group exhibitions
including the Iowa Miniprint International in 2002, The
Low End Theory in Little Rock, AR in 2002, and numerous shows
at the now defunct [Untitled] gallery in Charleston. He is also
currently a featured artist in the Art-o-Mat project which produces
art vending machines in many galleries and museums across the
country. Until now, Snead has not had a solo exhibition, and stuff
i own and people i know is the first in what is sure to be
a long and illustrious career.
The wit and humor in Snead's work makes the viewer laugh. Whether
producing an uncomfortable or genuine laugh, his work forces the
viewer to deal with underlying ironic social or political issues
while it still continues to be highly personal and autobiographical.
During the exhibition's opening, a Ssilent auction of all artwork
featured in the exhibit was held. The proceeds of the auction
will benefit the new Redux Summer Art Institute, a joint program
with the Charleston Count School District which gives talented
high school students the opportunity to experience what a career
in the arts can provide.
