Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Sherry Thurston

The Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, is featuring the works of Sneads Ferry, NC, artist Sherry Thurston, through Mar. 31, 2004.

Thurston is well known for her landscapes and seascapes of the Carolina coast. This collection, entitled Beaches, includes a range of media and style, all with a definite coastal theme, but created over a number of years. According to the artist, some of the pieces portray actual places and others are glimpses of beaches she has passed by wishing she had time to stop.

The newest works in the show are oils including: The Hammock, Rainbows and Clouds and The Girls, depicting three little playmates in a sandy beach puddle. Sunrise in Sneads Ferry, a pastel, was the poster image for the town's 2003 Shrimp Festival.

Thurston was trained at East Carolina University where she focused on drawing and printmaking, and the use of line and texture is evident in her work. Says Thurston, "The style of painting I use has evolved through the years from very realistic watercolors to sensitive, colorful, textured layers of paint with drawing techniques scratched beneath and through layers."

Ginny Lassiter, Sunset River Marketplace owner and Executive Director, says, "The beach is a constant theme for Sherry. It grounds her, as an artist and as a person. It's a refuge, in fact, and that comes through in her paintings."

Thurston is one of more than 150 regional artists whose work is displayed at Sunset River Marketplace.
