Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Philip Juras

Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, will presents new paintings by Philip Juras in an exhibition entitled, Southern Landscapes, on view from Mar. 4 through Apr. 4, 2005.

The 11 paintings in the show were painted between Oct. 2004 and Feb. 2005. The work includes plein air work from Ossabaw Island, GA, and studio work from locations in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Juras believes that the landscapes of the Southeastern coast often presents scenes that are both beautiful and inviting through the processes of nature. Juras states, "Working in the field and in the studio, I endeavor to capture something of these arrangements of nature, and the effects of a particular moment's sunlight. I hope to give the viewer a tangible sense of being in these scenes, and in those moments of being there, to understand the way they work, and to feel the desire to explore them further".

Juras, a native of Augusta, GA, is a landscape painter. His love for natural landscapes began on the many trips his family made to explore the forests and fields of the Southeast, and continued to grow through many years of travel through Europe and the United States. Juras' work as an artist began in earnest while he was studying in Cortona, Italy. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1990, he continued to travel frequently, painting the landscapes of the places he visited, including England, Germany, India, and the western US.

Juras earned a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Georgia in 1997, writing his thesis on the pre-settlement savannahs that once flourished across the southeastern piedmont. After working two years in the landscape architecture profession in Alexandria, VA, Juras returned to Athens, GA, in 2000 to devote himself more fully to painting. Though still painting the landscapes of foreign travel, much of his current work explores southeastern landscapes which have remained in a natural state. Juras' work is held in private collections in the US, Germany and India, and has been exhibited in one and two person shows and juried group exhibitions.

In addition to being Charleston's oldest gallery specializing in the art of the Charleston Renaissance, Carolina Galleries also features contemporary paintings celebrating the region's continuing aesthetic evolution.
