March Issue 2005

Art Institute of Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Victoria Burke

The Art Institute of Charlotte Gallery's March exhibit will be paintings by Victoria Burke, a fifth quarter Graphic Design student at The Art Institute of Charlotte in Charlotte, NC. The exhibit will be on view from Mar. 4-31, 2005.

Color Expressions is a series of abstract acrylic paintings layered to create textured finishes. Colors were mixed from the three primaries, red, yellow and blue, with varying shades of each. As the paint dried quickly, she added layer upon layer of fresh color.

"I was inspired by Gustav Klimt, an Austrian artist, who created abstract and realistic detailed, erotic paintings. I drew circles and experimented with gold foil which is reminiscent of his style. When I was content with my finished piece, I wanted to add something that reflected me. I have a passion for mosaics and wanted to incorporate this into my paintings. Without overpowering the canvas with pieces of cut stained glass, I opted to place just a taste of glass within each," said Burke.

"My subject matter originates from emotion and imagination. I sometimes sketch initial thoughts in my sketch book until I can transfer them to canvas. Most of the time, my sketches are just beginnings, and the real art comes to life when I begin on canvas."
