March Issue 2005
Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Duy Huynh
A new voice expressing a seldom seen humanistic
perspective, Duy Huynh is commanding attention throughout the
Southeast. This is his second highly anticipated solo exhibition
at Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, and the appeal
of this body of work is undeniable in its richness. The exhibition
will take place from Mar. 4 through Apr. 24, 2005.
Originally from Vietnam, Huynh immigrated to the United States
when he was six. His intriguing personal history began in a stranded
refugee boat (which continually appears as an ongoing symbol of
journey through struggle and renewal). Huynh's existential paintings
capture a world that is personal yet universal in its narrative.
Concepts draw on the combination of Asian and Western culture,
layered with symbolic elements of his relationships and family.
Otherworldly figures inhabit sparsely exquisite spaces and successfully
balance transcendence and freedom with the complexity of life
challenges. In addition to Huynh's reputation as a canvas painter,
he is interested in reaching a cross section of the population
with his message in mural form, creating even more enthusiasm
for his work.
Art critic Scott Lucas describes Huynh's paintings as "signposts of a sensitive soul searching steady ground in a dangerous and vulnerable world."
The gallery is also featuring a selection of Venetian inspired blown glass by young marvels Anthony Schafermeyer and Claire Kelly, in conjunction with the exhibition, Murano: Glass from the Olnick Spanu Collection, showing at The Mint Museum of Craft + Design, in April. The Mint exhibit features a collection of the most impressive Murano glass in the world.
