Green Rice Designs in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Michele Norris and Michelle Sutton

Two Charlotte, NC, artists will collaborate for a show to open at NoDa's Green Rice Designs & Gallery from Mar. 4 - Apr. 23, 2005. The show, titled FiG will exhibit the compelling works of Michele Norris and Michelle Sutton.

The fig, is a small, sweet pear-shaped fruit with an organic, feminine shape and long history dating back to the Garden of Eden. Originating from the Mediterranean the fig has come to symbolize paradise, fertility, and sensuality. A rich visual story is waiting to be discovered in each of Norris and Sutton's works.

Both Norris and Sutton left behind other design-related careers to pursue fine art after having children. Their motherhood has inspired their artwork. "My experience as a mother has reshaped my perspective of design, femininity and womanhood, and has inspired me to communicate feminine complexity, strength and sensitivity in my work," Sutton said.

Michele Norris

Since 2000, Michele Norris has painted commissioned works for private clients and regularly exhibits at STUDIO 1 at the ARTHOUSE, a working gallery located in Charlotte's historic North Davidson Arts District (NoDa). Her images feature a bold use of color, strong composition throughout a variety of genre.

Michelle Sutton

Michelle Sutton has an undergraduate degree in architecture, an interest that strongly influences her mixed media artwork, which often layers segments of architectural drawings with her acrylic paintings, or uses basswood, a model-making material used by architects. She is currently the full-time mother of a 16-month-old daughter, and for the last year has exhibited her paintings at Green Rice Gallery.

"These two artists have complementary styles and a common subject matter that are very powerful together," said Green Rice Gallery owner Allison Hertzler. "We are very excited about this exhibition and expect a great response."
