Wine Bar at McCrady's in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Charles Ailstock
The Wine Bar at McCrady's in Charleston, SC,
has reopened with a new look and new feel and to complete this
transition, local artist Charles Ailstock has transformed the
space as he unveils his latest work entitled, Suspension,
which will be on view through May 17, 2005.
Ailstock, a graduate of the College of Charleston, has been featured
in several prominent exhibits, including Piccolo Spoleto and shows
at the Humanities Foundation and the Halsey Gallery. Suspension
is a series of 13 oil paintings on canvas featuring figures in
motion and the works will vary in size from 24" x 40"
to 32" x 40". Ailstock's inspiration for this
show comes from the artist Honore Daumier, whose painting, Man
on a Rope, has had an impact on Ailstock since his college
days.
"I have wanted for some time to do a show of figurative work
in which none of the subjects are grounded," says Ailstock.
"Each subject will be hanging, swinging, or falling, giving
them that strong sense of motion that is so important to me."
In Ailstock's paintings, light and motion are
meant to be exaggerated but still believable, with texture being
the most contemporary element of the work. His technique involves
heavily applied paint, layered and carved out in places but never
smoothed. Ailstock believes that this helps show the process of
creation.
