Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, SC, Offers Works by Mary Walker
Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, SC, will present the exhibition, Stations of the Cross: Interpretations, featuring paintings by Mary Walker. The exhibit located in the Little Gallery in the Mepkin Abbey Store will be on view from Mar. 1 through Apr. 30, 2005. The exhibit is part of an ongoing series at the Abbey by artists whose works explore meanings of the spiritual.
These small painting by Walker, presenting the "Stations of the Cross" depicts the events of Holy Week in close perspective. Thus a particular iconic element of one event communicates a partial meaning of the full event. Walker has done other series based on Dante's Inferno and on Shakespeare's comedies.
Painter and printmaker Walker notes that, "sometimes the narrative (of my work) is a given and other times it develops from the imagery. In either case, I like to leave the narrative open to interpretation." Concerning painting a series of works she says, "I can enter more fully into the mood of the piece if I have many images to do... I can gain a better understanding of the core meaning."
Recent excursions to Italy have influenced the development of Walker's work. She was a resident artist at the Scuola Internatinale di Grafica in Venice and has done independent work at the Santa Reparata studio in Florence. Over the last few years she has gone to study and work at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA. Her paintings and prints are represented by galleries throughout the southeast and her work has been shown internationally in France and Italy.
