Sizl Gallery in Carrboro, NC, Features Works by Geoffrey Holder and Jim Moon

Sizl Gallery in Carrboro, NC, will present the exhibit, 2 Good Friends, 2 Extraordinary Artists, featuring works by Geoffrey Holder and Jim Moon, will be on view from Mar. 11 through Apr. 6, 2005.

Geoffrey Holder

Geoffrey Holder has a kaleidoscope of talents as dancer, actor, writer, director, costume designer and painter. Winner of two Tony awards for his direction of the Broadway Musical, The Wiz, and a Guggenheim Fellowship, Holder currently lives in NYC where he continues to paint. Influenced by his native Trinidad, Holder's paintings are rhythmical, tropically warm and brightly clear in color.

Jim Moon

Jim Moon, a native of Graham, NC, met Holder when they had a joint exhibit of their work in Washington, DC. Although the artists have vastly different styles, in that Moon's work has a quiet dreamlike quality, both painters retain a boldly honest quality. Moon's work is not greatly influenced by other artists. According to Norman Pendergraft, former director of NCCU Art Museum, what influenced Moon's work most was suggested by Peggy Guggenheim. She encouraged him to settle in Veneto, Italy and his art flourished in its light. Holder says of Moon's paintings:"It seems to float between two worlds, and I like anything that mystical."

Moon continues to paint in a studio on his farm in Davidson County. He has taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and was founder of the Visual Arts Department for the North Carolina School of the Arts. Currently he devotes much of his time to Asolare, a non profit organization that supports the arts for young people.
