The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Work by Rhett Thurman
At Home and Beyond, is the title of the show of works by Charleston's own Rhett Thurman being presented by The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC. The exhibit will be on view from Mar. 4 - 31, 2005. The artwork is imbued with a warmth and an elegance which comes directly from the artist herself who is the epitome of a "southern belle."
Thurman has achieved national acclaim for both
her oils and watercolors. She has exhibited with the prestigious
American and National Watercolor Societies. Her work has been
featured in national publications, and is included in private,
museum and corporate collections. She was chosen to paint renowned
blacksmith, Philip Simmons, for the Josiah Tenant House in Charleston.
Thurman was the 2003 artist in residence for the Gibbes Museum
of Art Poets and Painters' program.
Thurman is the recipient of the 1995 Outstanding Alumna Award
from Queens College, where she earned her degree in
studio art. Her education and painting experience include further
study in Europe and the United States.
Thurman calls it her "art quest," that desire to produce, to produce work that has universal appeal with a human warmth. Attracted by dazzling light, color and contours, particularly human form, she produces work that is personal, direct and approachable. A dedicated painter, Thurman's paintings are romantic without being romanticized. Whether painting Charleston or the west, Africa or Europe, her highly identifiable style always makes one smile and provides a comforting sense of place. Her figurative work illustrates the exotic differences in local while showing the human element is the same here or beyond.
