March Issue 2006
Charleston Artist Guild Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Tony Young
The
Charleston Artist Guild Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present
The Entrepreneurs, an exhibition of paintings by Tony Young.
The exhibition opens Mar. 1 and continues through Mar. 29, 2006.
The exhibit depicts the entrepreneurial spirit. Subjects include
street musicians, fishermen, street vendors and others. The artist
uses color and texture to evoke interest in the subjects. In one
example, Rolex, $100, Mister?, he uses color and dramatic
lighting to show the elusiveness of this street corner hustler.
The figure's face is in shadow as he looks furtively over his
shoulder while displaying a number of expensive watches on his
forearm. The texture in this painting is predominantly rough,
lending a certain earthiness to the character.
Young says, "I'm trying to introduce energy and excitement into the paintings by using brighter color and less realism. My style continues to evolve and to become less realistic." Indeed, the paintings are more impressionistic than Young's previous efforts.
Young was born in Greenwood, SC, and graduated from Clemson University. After a career in manufacturing and retail management, he returned to his first love, art. Primarily self-taught, Young has studied with such nationally known artists as Tom Lynch, Steven Quiller and Robert Burridge. He is a member of several local arts organizations and currently serves as the president of the Goose Creek Artists Guild. He is represented by the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery, The Sea Gull Gallery and The Islands Art Gallery locally. Works are also available on the web at (www.tyoungartist.com).
