March Issue 2006
Clemson University in Clemson, NC, Features Regional Printmaking Exhibit
The Southeastern Printmaking Invitational is on view in the Lee Gallery at Clemson University in Clemson, SC, through Mar. 17, 2006. The exhibition includes 49 prints created during 2004-2005 at Clemson University, the University of Georgia, the University of North Carolina, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Tennessee.
These diverse prints highlight the skills of the new generation of printmakers and showcase them as artists. Southeastern Printmaking Invitational demonstrates the skills and the dedication needed to be a printmaker. These prints from 49 artists are examples of many different printmaking techniques and processes, demonstrating the possibilities that printmaking has to offer an artist.
Printmaking has a rich history as a fine art with ties to design and commercial art as well. Printmaking's processes range from centuries-old woodblock prints to recent computer- age digital prints. Printmaking has been used by some on the most renowned artists of the twenty-first century, including Andy Warhol, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg. Their post-modern exploration of the processes and techniques opened the doors of a very traditional history of the print to a combination of techniques and layering of ink creating rich surfaces. This compilation of images and techniques in printmaking attracts many contemporary artists.
The understanding of how to use the many different processes that fall under the category of printmaking requires time and dedication, sometimes a life-long quest. Techniques such as lithography, intaglio, woodcut, and letterpress are the oldest of the printmaking family. The more recent additions are silkscreen, monotype, and digital. There are many different subcategories under each of these techniques, and there are always new innovations and materials being brought into the field. Southeastern Printmaking Invitational contains contemporary examples of many of these techniques.
