Nina Liu and Friends Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Exhibit of Artists Who Met in Iowa
Nina Liu and Friends
in Charleston, SC, celebrates the promise of spring and long-time
friendships with an exhibition of work by women artists entitled
Art Ladies from Iowa City. The exhibition, featuring works
by, Loret Mast, Marcia Wegman, Nancy Purington, Susie Miller Simon,
Sharon Burns Knutson, and Nina Liu, opens on Mar. 3 and will be
on view through Apr. 30, 2006.
In the spring of 1982 Nina Liu introduced a Brazilian artist and
Fulbright scholar to a group of professional women artists in
Iowa City, IA. As part of that process, Liu arranged studio visits
that resulted in an ongoing series of informal gatherings during
which these artists shared friendship, food, and their new work
with one another.
Though some of the members of the group, including Liu, have moved
away from Iowa City, they have continued to come together through
the years to renew their friendships and share their work. Many
of them regularly exhibit their work in Charleston at Nina Liu
and Friends. Art Ladies from Iowa City celebrates these
artists' friendship and their talents.
The exhibition features
Loret Mast's bold watercolors and ceramics of floral forms and
portraits. The brilliant colors of Mast's work contrast with the
indigo and gold of Nancy Purintgon's paintings. Other artists
in the exhibition include Marcia Wegman, Susie Miller Simon, and
Sharon Burns Knutson. Their work ranges from simplified, almost
iconic forms to lush, colorful pastels. The exhibition also will
feature Liu's striking functional and decorative ceramics.
