Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, Offers Works by Werner Haker, Kenn Kotara, Donna Price, and Katie Walker
The Upstairs Artspace (formerly Upstairs Gallery) in Tryon, NC, is presenting new solo exhibits, on view through Apr. 15, 2006. Werner Haker: Transfigurations features recent abstract paintings by the Brevard, NC artist and architect; Cubitum: the measure of a man, offers a room-size installation by the Asheville, NC artist Kenn Kotara and there is also a small exhibit of work by Donna Price of Asheville, and Katie Walker of Greenville, SC.
Werner Haker's artistic career has soared since he began painting seriously a few years ago. His exhibition record includes shows at the Conn Gallery, Landrum, SC and Chattanooga, TN, and Long Shot Gallery and Captain's Bookshelf, Asheville. Combining collage with color-field expressionism, Haker's paintings engage the viewer's intellect and excite intense emotions.
An acclaimed artist of abstract paintings and sculpture, Kenn Kotara has created a large, interactive installation focusing on the ancient measurement of the cubit. Used from the Middle Ages to early modern times, the cubit is the length from one's elbow to the tip of the middle finger, about 18 inches. The exhibit consists of drawings, paintings, 3D objects and computer animation based on the cubit and incorporating the artist's familiar curvilinear and geometric shapes.
Kotara has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums, including Gallery C, Raleigh, NC, Sandler Hudson Gallery, Atlanta, GA, Thomas Werner Gallery, New York City, NY, Asheville Museum of Art and Fayetteville (NC) Museum of Art. He is in many corporate and public collections.
A "Walk & Talk" tour of the art led by the artists will be offered on Mar. 12, 2006, at 2pm.
Upstairs Artspace is a new name for the well-known Upstairs Gallery. "'Artspace' more accurately reflects our broad scope of exhibits, programs and educational activities," says Mike Patterson, president of the Board of Directors.
